Signs You’re Using the Wrong Packaging

Broken white mug in a cardboard box with shredded paper. The scene suggests damage and fragility because of wrong packaging.
When the Box Doesn’t Fit, Things Start to Slip

In logistics, retail or e-commerce, your box either works or it doesn’t. It protects your product, keeps freight efficient, and says something about your business before a customer even opens it.

At Imperial Cartons, we manufacture all of our cartons in our Melbourne factory to help Australian businesses address packaging problems before they cost them time, money or customer trust. If you’re still using stock-standard boxes or ordering from bulk suppliers, here’s what to look out for:

1. Your boxes are failing in transit.

The board grade or flute may not be right for what you’re shipping. We select materials based on your packing procedures, so you do not have to keep patching problems.

2. Your products don’t fit the box properly.

If you’re stuffing in extra padding, hearing things rattle or squeezing items into awkward spaces, the box is wrong. A proper fit does not just protect the item better. It looks better, too. We build to suit your product, not the other way around.

To learn more tips about proper fits, watch our video below on “space is your enemy”.

3. Your packaging looks off-brand.

Presentation matters. If your product arrives in a mismatched, blank or poorly sized box, it sends the wrong message. We offer Flexographic printing using water-based inks, which gives you clean branding even on low-volume runs.

4. You are relying on generic bulk suppliers.

Bulk, cheap boxes quickly add up when you factor in damaged products, wasted space and missed branding opportunities. While we do have some in-stock options available, we specialise in solving your problem through custom packaging solutions.

We are not here to simply move stock. We are here to manufacture exactly what you need.

5. You think custom is not an option.

It is. We offer custom solutions with no minimums. Whether you need five printed cartons or five thousand standard ones, we can deliver quickly and locally.

Packaging jargon? We’ll handle it.

You don’t need to know what a "flute" or "stereo" is to get the right box. That’s our job. We make sure your packaging works as it should. Strong, stackable and on-brand. We’ll explain it when needed. Otherwise, we work with you to understand your needs and just make it happen.

We start with the right questions, you end with the right box

We will walk through these with you and build a solution that fits. Designed, manufactured and delivered from our Melbourne site.

  • Is the product fragile?

  • Will it be stacked, shipped or stored?

  • What message should the packaging send?

  • How many do you actually need?

If something about your packaging is not sitting right or if you are not sure, it is worth a conversation. No jargon. No obligation. Just a conversation to see if you have the best packaging solution for your business.
