When a Stock Carton Is the Smarter Choice (and When It Isn’t)

Ask a packaging manufacturer what box you need, and you might expect the answer to be a custom one. Sometimes it is. But plenty of businesses are well served by a carton that’s already sitting on our warehouse shelves, and telling you that honestly is part of giving good advice, which is very important to us at Imperial Cartons. This guide looks at when a stock carton makes sense, what our in-stock range includes, and the signs it’s time to consider something custom made for your product.

What we mean by a stock carton

A stock carton is a box made in a standard size and held ready to go in our Laverton North warehouse, rather than being manufactured for a specific order. Because it’s already made, there’s no design stage, no sample to approve and no waiting for production. You choose a size, order online or request a quote, and the boxes are usually ready within 24 to 48 hours.

When a stock carton does the job

The clearest case is when your product already fits a standard size well. If an item sits snug in one of our cartons, with a little room for protective packaging and no room to move around, a custom carton might not be necessary.

Stock cartons also suit businesses that ship a mix of products. If your orders change from one day to the next, a few well-chosen standard sizes will often cover nearly everything, without you having to hold a separate box for every item you sell.

Timing is another factor. When you need boxes this week rather than next month, a carton that’s already made can be the practical answer.

They’re a sensible starting point for new businesses and new product lines, too. Before you know your volumes, your best sellers or how your goods hold up in transit, committing to a custom design can be premature. Stock cartons let you start shipping, learn what works and come back to custom packaging once you have real information to design around. There’s no minimum order, so you can buy what you need now and order more as you go.

Finally, if the box is for moving, storing or transporting goods rather than presenting them to a customer, strength and size will matter far more than appearance. That’s exactly what a good stock carton is built for.

What’s in our in-stock range

We currently hold 11 sizes. They start with the S9 (230 x 180 x 155mm) for smaller items and run through the A4 and AA4 cartons, each available in a shorter version, the S22 and S66, and the Book and Wine carton, up to the Tea Chest (410 x 410 x 570mm) for bulky but lighter goods. There are also two shallow formats, the Diecut and the CCF, for flatter items. You’ll find every size and its dimensions on our In-Stock Cartons page, and if you’re ordering in larger quantities, our team can put together a bulk quote.

When it’s time to look at custom

Stock cartons have their limits, and it’s worth recognising them early. If your product moves around inside the box, or you’re relying on a lot of filler to keep it in place, that’s usually a sign the size isn’t right. Extra space also costs money in freight, because carriers charge for the room a parcel takes up as well as its weight. We covered this in detail in Reducing Shipping Costs Through Smarter Carton Design.

Custom is also worth considering when your packaging is part of the customer experience. A printed box carries your brand from your warehouse to your customer’s door, and for products sold in store, the carton may be the first thing a shopper sees. If damage, returns or customer complaints keep cropping up, our article When a Standard Box Won’t Cut It might be helpful to you.

The middle ground

The choice isn’t always between a stock carton and a fully custom design. A regular shipper, made in a standard style to your own measurements, can give you a much better fit without a complex design process. Because it uses a standard style, there’s no special equipment to make before production can start, and we can advise on the right board for your product and provide a sample to trial if needed.

The simplest way to find out what suits you is to talk to us. Tell us about your product and how it travels, and we’ll give you a straight answer, whether that’s a box from our shelves or something made to measure.
